World Game Book

Ready for Anything: Designing Resilience for a Transforming World is a new book by IFF Member and World Modelling Research Coordinator, Tony Hodgson. The title refers to the goal of all resilience thinking: ‘Plan for anything, but don’t plan for everything’.

The book describes Hodgson’s World System Model that provides a deceptively simple way to frame our decisions in the context of everything that is going on in the world. But its real value lies at a deeper level. For it also encourages in us new capacities to make sense of what would otherwise be overwhelming, confusing, contradictory data about the state of the world today and tomorrow. Hodgson describes the World System Model as ‘a cognitive gymnasium’, ‘a mandala’, as the basis for IFF’s role playing ‘World Game’ and – in its playground version – ‘21st century hopscotch’.

The IFF World Game has proved immensely popular in many formats. The book gives a number of case studies: from playful exploration of the future viability of the USA, through to serious context-setting research for tackling ‘wicked’ problems like obesity or health inequalities. Its use in a recent UK Government Foresight project to anticipate the potential impacts on the UK of climate change impacts elsewhere in the world begins to show the power for getting to grips with global challenges of a framework that is both truly systemic and simple to grasp.

An outline of the book is available elsewhere on this site, as is further information about the world system model and the IFF world game.
