Futures of Learning:
the more we know the less we use

About the Project

This was a project to hold two international seminars for up to 50 participants in Glasgow and Paris during 2005 considering the 'futures of learning'. The theme of both seminars is innovation. The first has an emphasis on what we can learn from successful innovation in practice; the second addresses new learning paradigms - the state of current research. The underlying conundrum the project is exploring is why it seems so difficult to apply what we now know about learning in practice. The results of the seminars informed the publication of a special edition of the European Journal of Education and of the journal Futuribles.

Partners

The project is run in partnership with the Universite de Paris-Dauphine, Futuribles, the European Journal of Education, the Scottish Executive and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Status

The first seminar took place in Glasgow on 24/25 June, hosted by Scottish Education Minister Peter Peacock. A distinguished group of international speakers addressed questions of policy learning, executive education, the learning society, values in a global society etc. Participants also went on a learning journey to view innovative Scottish projects. The second seminar took place in Paris on 25/26 November. Presentations and a full report of both seminars are available for download at http://www.internationalfuturesforum.com/futures-of-learning. Scottish participants in the Glasgow event met together in advance of the Paris seminar, not least to consider the implications of the events for Scottish practice and innovation. IFF published a reflective pamphlet after the seminars on the role of government and policy in the learning system - see separate project entry on 'Policy Learning' to read about this and to download a copy of the report. Note that the full text articles from the special edition of the European Journal of Education are available for download from http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/toc/ejed/42/2.
