Culture and Health - fresh thinking for public health in the 21st century

About the Project

The IFF is a partner in a five year study on the relationship between modern culture and wellbeing. The study has investigated the ways in whch dimensions of modern culture for example - economism, consumerism and individualism - have an impact on wellbeing. The emergence of related problems such as climate change, peak oil and the current economic situation, means that these issues are looming large in the lives of many people locally and globally.  Using various methods the study has explored a range of perspectives on these issues which exist in both the research literature and in the lived experience of everyday life.

Partners

The study was conducted by members of the Department of Public Health at The University of Glasgow. The advisory group in which the IFF participates also includes members from the Centre for Integrative Care, the Scottish Government, The Glasgow Centre for Population Health, Learn Direct Scotland.

Status

A number of papers have been written, both on learning journeys undertaken by the research team and published papers.  The work has now concluded and synthesised in a book called The Future Public Health.

A complementary sister project is under way. If an exploration of culture and wellbeing travels from the outside in, the sister project goes from the inside out - starting with ideas of relationship to self, healing capacity, healing relationship, external circumstances and context. This sister project is called the Healing Shift Enquiry.

Links have been made with the Public Health Network in North West England.  They have badged their version of the Future Public Health (or Fifth Wave) as the "New New Public Health" or N2PH for short.  This is a homage to Ashton and Seymour's original work in 1988 on the "New Public Health".
