Ten Things To Do In A Conceptual Emergency

This is a fully revised, updated and expanded version of a previous IFF pamphlet – now published by Triarchy Press. The book describes the condition of conceptual emergency - in which the models and concepts we use to grasp and make sense of the world are losing their power and responsible and intelligent action becomes more difficult as a result.

Beautifully illustrated, the book outlines ten strategies for operating effectively in a world we no longer understand and cannot control:

- Design for transition to a new world

- Try other worldviews on for size

- Give up on the myth of control

- Re-perceive the present

- Trust subjective experience

- Take the long view

- Take insightful action

- Recognise and support new organisational integrities

- Practise social acupuncture

- Sustain networks of hope

The second half of the book - Emergency Response - tells stories of how these strategies have been applied in practice, including case studies spanning climate change and energy security, radioactive waste, the role of the arts, rural communities, BP Grangemouth and the Falkirk economy, and leadership, governance and social change in India.

SPECIAL OFFER FOR LIMITED TIME ONLY: Free supplemental pamphlet - Beyond Survival

This short pamphlet distils from IFF’s experience a series of four lessons to orient ourselves to the present crisis. The first lesson is survival – an essential foundation. It draws on studies of survivors and examples of the so-called ‘survivor mindset’. The second lesson is insight – the capacity to face up to reality and start to appreciate new opportunities in the environment. The third lesson is perseverance – understanding what it will take to keep body and soul together in powerful times (drawing on IFF’s work on psychological capacity). The final lesson is hope – without which survival is an empty victory.

The pamphlet is written as an appendix to Ten Things to do in a Conceptual Emergency and is not available to purchase separately.
