How to use Kitbag for families

To start, switch off all computers, TVs and radios.  Begin by using the calming oil, applying it to wrists and taking a gentle whiff in and out.

Open the Feelings card and ask the question, “What colour are you feeling today?” and explore why everyone is feeling that colour.  If you find it difficult to take turns about this, use the egg timer so that they all get a minute each.  Adults can join in too.

The Animal cards give you different qualities which will help everyone grow in confidence.  Younger ones will just want to sense the animal without any particular quality being mentioned.  Older ones might want to explore the quality that is linked to the animal as well.  You can all draw pictures of the animal friend you have picked if there is time.

The Presence cards are really good for helping everyone calm down.  Try taking a card before bedtime and use the egg timer to see if you can do it for a whole minute.  If everyone does this together you can create a really calm space in the room.  Try it and see!

The Wonder Journey music is lovely to listen to at bedtime.  It starts with the noises of the street and village before going into much slower and calmer music.  Use the calming oil at the same time and you will find yourself much better prepared for sleep.

An alternative is for someone to read the Wonder Journey story whilst the music is going.  You can do this when you get in from school to help unwind before getting on with homework and other activities.  Just before bed is also a good time.  The person reading the story should take their time so that it unfolds gently with the music and everyone can feel really relaxed by the end.

Sometimes it can be difficult to talk about how we feel.  The puppets have feelings too.  You can show them the Feelings Card and ask them how they feel and talk about this.  Kitbag for FamiliesThey like getting Animal Cards as well.  So you can pick one for them and imagine how that animal might help them.  Just have fun and make up your own games!

Other useful things to have are pens and paper for drawing animals or other thoughts and feelings that come up.  It is also good to create a picture album of the people, places and animals that you love.
