Kitbag evolved from the insight that we are experiencing a crisis of the psychosphere and there are transformative responses to that crisis. Working with health professionals from a range of disciplines and with a team of designers, IFF developed the first prototype Kitbag in 2005. The first external validation for Kitbag came at a conference of mental health professionals and emergency response workers addressing the psychological impact of traumatic events like 9/11, Katrina and the Asian tsunami. Kitbag has since been tested in a variety of settings, including in communities. A longer trial was undertaken at Cornton Vale prison in Stirling, where three women used a modified version for a year and are now developing a much wider programme. Along the way Kitbag was chosen as one of ten promising innovations in mental health for specialist funding and support from NESTA.
IFF continue to develop Kitbag for other settings. More formal trials in communities are planned for the first half of 2009. And in response to demand a children’s version is under development.
There is more information about this and the team of health professionals who have been involved in the work in the Kitbag brochure, available for download below (right-click and "Save As").
