IFF3: April 2002, St Andrews, Scotland

Description

By the third plenary session we had reached the midpoint of our original two-year project. We determined at this stage to test our emerging insights in practice. As one of our members put it, ‘what are we good for?’

Hence this meeting was based around three ‘case encounters’. We set ourselves up as ‘second enlightenment consultants’ and went to three local ‘clients’ – BP Grangemouth, Fife NHS Board, and Dundee City Council - and asked them to give us their most difficult problem, preferably one showing up as a paradox. Dundee City Council wanted to know how to put together an effective learning strategy in a city turned off to learning. Fife NHS Board gave us the challenge that the majority of poor people in Fife do not live in poor communities, yet the only effective policy interventions we have are based on concentrations of poverty. BP Grangemouth told us that they were having to cut 1000 jobs from the plant to restore global competitiveness, yet this would depress the local economy on which they also depend.

The experiment was an extraordinary success, which effectively laid the ground for our ongoing project work in the three areas we began to look into at this meeting: health, learning and enterprise. We also discovered the usefulness of the IFF Prompts we had developed for ourselves – now available for use by others.
